About the author[edit | edit source]
Baqir Sharif Qureshi is an Iraqi Shia researcher, historian and writer born in Najaf. He completed his studies by the virtue of Iraqi professors. One of his most famous teachers was Sayyid Abul Qasem Khoei, whose lectures on topics other than Jurisprudence were attended by him for almost twenty years. He has written works on the biographies of the Imams, including the following:

The book “The life of Imam Husain” has been written in Arabic by Baqir Sharif Qureshi and Hossein Mahfouti has translated it into Persian that has been published in 3 volumes by the Islamic Education Foundation Publications. The book, consisting of 886 pages was translated into English by Sayyid Athar Husain S. H. Rizvi and published by Ansariyan Publications in 2007. The sales rank of this book is 1,178,439.

Excerpt from the book[edit | edit source]
The book begins with the story of Imam Husain birth, born to a mother named Fatima, who is a ray of her father's soul, and to a father named Ali, the leader of truth and justice on earth, and was raised in the arms of “Umm al Fadhl” (The mother of Abundance). Then the book deals with Imam Hussain’s upbringing-structures, in which several elements such as inheritance, family, spiritual education and environment have played a role, and the writer explains that Imam Husain had each one of these factors in their best forms.
In the other part of the book, the legacy of Imam Husain along with a collection of philosophical and theological issues that have been mentioned that Imam Husain explained and described all from the perspective of Islam. After Imam Ali came to power and carried out governmental actions, such as the deposition of the governors of Uthman and declaring equality and justice, the Quraysh became upset and revolted in different areas. The first war to take place against Imam Ali was the Battle of Camel followed by the battles of Siffin and Nahrawan.
The author then refers to the assassination of Imam Ali by Ibn Muljim, who yelped when got struck, “By the Lord of Kabah, I have been victorious”. According to historians, commanding an army in Nukhaila to confront Muawiya, Imam Husain was not in Kufa at that time. After the martyrdom of Imam Ali, Imam Hassan took over the caliphate and faced the unfaithfulness of the people of Kufa which, forced him to make peace with Mu'awiyah; an event thoroughly covered in the book.
In the continuation of the book, the movement of Imam Husain towards Mecca and its reasons are discussed. The Imam arrived in Mecca on Friday night, the third of Sha'ban. Then, the letters of the people of Kufa to Imam Husain are mentioned, which proved their sincerity and encouraged Imam to move towards them. After receiving those letters, the Imam sent his representative, Muslim, towards them.
The author further refers to the battle of Karbala and writes that since the companions of Imam Husain presented instances of their amazing heroism, the Umayyad army refused to continue the one-on-one battle, thereby launching a massive attack, first by Umar ibn Hajjaj and then by Shimir. The book gives a complete description of the battle and the martyrdom of the Imam's companions. Then, the martyrdom of Imam Husain and the events after the martyrdom, such as looting the body of the Imam, looting the women of the Prophet, attacking Imam Zayn al-Abidin, etc., are fully discussed.
