Martyrs of Karbala are those who were martyred on Muharram 10th (Ashura), 61/680, in the Battle of Karbala by Omar b. Sa'd's army. The exact number of the Martyrs of Karbala is disputed. According to al-Shaykh al-Mufid in his al-Irshad, the number of the heads of these martyrs amounts to 72.

The Forerunners of Martyrdom
