The Last Supplication of Imam Hussain was recited before his martyrdom at the tent of his family. On the 10th day of Muharram, known as the day of Ashura, in the year 61 A.H. when Imam Hussain came into the tent to bid farewell to his family members, he held the hand of his sick son, Ali b. al-Hussain and pressed it against his chest. He then recited his last supplication.

Context[edit | edit source]

It is related that when Imam Hussain saw that seventy-two persons among his friends and relatives had fallen down, he turned toward the tents of his family and called out,

“O Sakinah! O Fatima! O Umm Kulthum! My salutations be upon you all!”

Hearing this Sakinah said, “O dear father! Have you resolved to die?” Imam replied,

“How could the one, who is bereaved by his friends and helpers, not resolve to die?”

Sakinah said, “O dear father! Then return us back to the sanctuary of our grandfather”. Imam replied,

“Alas! If a sand-grouse (a type of a bird) is released at night, it will sleep in peace”.

Hearing this, the women of his family started lamenting and Imam Hussain consoled them.

It is related in the same book that Imam Hussain then turned towards Umm Kulthum and said,

“I enjoin you towards goodness in matter of yourself. I am proceeding towards the battlefield in the midst of these enemies”.

Hearing this Sakinah started lamenting while Imam loved her extremely. He pressed her to his chest and wiped her tears and said,

“Know O my dear Sakinah! Very soon you will have to weep after me when death will have surrounded me, then do not aggrieve me now with your tears until the spirit remains in my body. Then when I am killed, you are more worthy of weeping upon me, O the best of women!”

It is related from Imam Muhammad al Baqir, that when Imam Hussain resolved to be martyred, he called for his eldest daughter Fatima. He then handed over to her a sealed envelope and an open testament. Imam Ali bin Hussain was ill at that moment, Fatima later handed over the letter to Imam Ali Zainul Abedeen and from him it came down to us.

It is related in Isbatul Wasiyyah of Mas’oodi, that Imam Hussain called for Imam Ali Zainul Abedeen in his state of illness, and then handed over to him ‘the Exalted Name’ (of Allah) and the legacy of the Prophets. He told him that he had handed over the (esoteric) wisdom, texts, books and weapons to Umm Salama and had advised her to hand over those things to him.

Supplication[edit | edit source]

Qutubuddin Rawandi in his Da’wat relates from Imam Ali Zainul Abedeen, that on the tenth of Muharram, my father pressed me to his heart while blood was flowing through him, and he said,

O son! I am teaching you a dua’ which you should remember. Angel Jibrael taught it to my grandfather the messenger of Allah who passed it to my mother Fatima. Whenever you have a special need or are faced with any calamity or crises, or are inflicted with any grief or hardship, then recite the following supplication”:

By the truth of Yaseen (a title of the Holy Prophet) and the Quran full of wisdom And for the sake of Taahaa (another title of the Holy Prophet) and the great Quran

O He Who is able to fulfill the desires of those ask.

O He Who knows what is in the heart.

O He Who banishes sorrow from the sorrowful.

O He Who dispels grief from those who grieve.

O He Who is merciful to old men. O He Who provides for infants.

O He Who needs not to be explained.

Send blessings upon Muhammad and his progeny and fulfill for me…(mention your wishes)
