Before departing to Kufa, Imam Hussain wrote a letter to the five chiefs of Basra, inviting them to come to his aid. One of the chiefs, Mas'ud b. 'Amr al-Azdi, responded with a letter in which he mentioned his tribe's support for the Imam. He gave his letter to Hajjaj b. Zayd to deliver to the Imam. Hajjaj delivered the letter to Imam and stayed with him. He was martyred in the first attack of the army of 'Umar b. Sa'd.
