Munjih b. Sahm (or Munhij) (Arabic: مُنْجِح أو منحج بن سهم) (d. 61/680) was among martyrs of the battle of Karbala. Munjih was a slave of Imam al-Sajjad who accompanied the caravan of Imam al-Hussain to Karbala.

Biography

Imam al-Hussain bought the mother of Munjih as a slave from Nufil b. Harith b. 'Abd al-Muttalib. She married another slave named Sahm who was Munjih's father. Munhij himself became a servant to Imam al-Sajjad.[1]

When Imam al-Hussain left Medina to Mecca with his supporters and his family, Munjih also left Medina with his mother.[2] Some sources stated that he accompanied the caravan of Imam al-Hussain.[3]

In the Battle of Karbala

Munjih was listed among martyrs of the battle of Karbala on the day Ashura.[4] However, the exact time of his martyrdom is not specifically known. One possibility is during the first wave of attack by the enemies of Imam al-Hussain, during which ten slaves of Ali b. Abi Talib and Imam al-Hussain were martyred according to Ibn Shahr Ashub.[5] The name of his murderer was Hassan b. Bakr al-Hanzali.[6] The name of Munjih is specifically stated in Ziyara al-Shuhada as a martyr in the Battle of Karbala.[7]
