Al-Hajjaj b. Zayd al-Sa'di (Arabic: الحجاج بن زید السعدی) was among the companions of Imam Hussain who was martyred in Karbala.

Father

His father was a well known speaker who fought alongside Imam Ali in the the Battle of Siffin. After the martyrdom of Imam Ali, Mu'awiya b. Abi Sufyan appointed him as the chief of the Shurta, but he declined the offer.

Battle of Karbala

Before departing to Kufa, Imam Hussain wrote a letter to the five chiefs of Basra, inviting them to come to his aid. One of the chiefs, Mas'ud b. 'Amr al-Azdi, responded with a letter in which he mentioned his tribe's support for the Imam. He gave his letter to Hajjaj b. Zayd to deliver to the Imam. Hajjaj delivered the letter to Imam and stayed with him. He was martyred in the first attack of the army of 'Umar b. Sa'd.

Hajjaj's name is mentioned in Ziyara al-Shuhada, when it states,

Peace be upon al-Hajjaj b. Zayd al-Sa'di.
