Abd al-Rahman ibn Aqil b. Abi Talib was among companions of Imam al-Hussain who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala on Ashura.

His Life

Abd al-Rahman was the son of Aqil ibn Abi Talib and according to a report from al-Tabari his mother was a salve woman.[1]

He was the son-in-law of Imam Ali. [2]His wife was called Khadija. [3]

Abd al-Rahman ibn Aqil was so tall that Lubab al-ansab narrated he was nicknamed as "the spear of Aqil family".[4]

Martyrdom

Abd al-Rahman ibn Aqil ibn Abi Talib was among companions of Imam al-Hussain who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala on Ashura. [5]

According to most sources, Usman bin Khalid bin Aseer Jahni and Bashr bin Sawt Hamadani Qanasi attacked Abdul Rahman bin Aqeel and killed him. al-Shaykh al-Mufid reported in al-Irshad that he was attacked and martyred by Uthman b. Khalid al-Hamdani.[6]The author of Lubab al-ansab reported that he was 35 when he was martyred.[7]

His name is mentioned as Martyrs of Karbala in Ziarat al-Nahiya al-Muqaddasa and al-Ziarat al-Rajabiyya.

His Rajaz

According to Ibn Shahr Ashub in his book al-Manaqib, Abd al-Rahman entered the battlefield while he was reciting this rajaz: My father was Aqeel thus know my position in the (Bani) Hashim, while the (Bani Hashim) are brothers of one another, and are considerably honest, masters of the Qur’an, this is Hussain whose base is eminent, and he is the Master of the seniors as also the youth
