Salim b. Amr b. Abd Allah (Arabic: سالِم بن عَمْرو بن عَبْدالله, martyrdom: 61/681) was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. He accompanied Muslim b. Aqil in his uprising, and after Muslim's martyrdom, left Kufa to join Imam al-Hussain's army.

Helping Muslim b. Aqil

Salim b. Amr b. Abd Allah was a servant of the Banu l-Madina al-Kalbi tribe. As a Shi'a, Salim helped Muslim b. Aqil in his uprising, and after Muslim's martyrdom, was arrested by Kathir b. Shahab. He managed to escape Obayd-Allah b. Ziyad's prison and hide with his own tribe.

Joining Imam al-Hussain

After Imam al-Hussain's caravan reached Karbala, Salim and a number of people from Banu Kalb joined the Imam's army. He was martyred on the Day of Ashura. Ibn Shahrashub writes in the book Ibsar al-'ayn that Salim was martyred during the first attack on the Day of Ashura. However, the same author does not list Salim among the first martyrs in existing copies of his book Manaqib.

Doubts About Existence

Salim is mentioned as martyr of Karbala in the version of Ziyara al-Shuhada that in the Hadith books Iqbal al-a'mal and Bihar al-anwar, with the phrase, "peace be upon Salim the servant of Banu l-Madina Kalbi". However, early Shiite sources of history and rijal do not mention Salim among martyrs of Karbala. Furthermore, he is not mentioned in the version of Ziyarat al-Shuhada cited in al-Shaykh al-Mufid's al-Mazar or in Ibn Mashhadi's Al-Mazar. Muhammad Taqi Shushtari has cast doubts over the existence of such a person.
